Officers arrived to find a 27-year-old man suffering gunshot wounds to his head and chest. He was treated by paramedics before being taken to St George Hospital in a serious condition.

Shortly after, police were called to a car fire at Kilkee Avenue in Kingsgrove. They arrived to find a Mercedes sedan had crashed into a home before bursting into flames.

No injuries were reported in the crash and firefighters extinguished the blaze. Burnt-out cars were also found in Birrong and Berala.

Police are now working to determine whether the car fires are linked to the shooting.

Police have set up crime scenes at both locations and are urging anyone with information to contact Burwood police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
